Gamified course

A global bank

Turned annual compliance into a 20-minute challenge people finish.

  • Learners18,000 employees in 22 countries
  • Built in10 weeks

The challenge

Every year, 18,000 employees sat through a 90-minute anti-money-laundering course. Completion was 98%. Two weeks later, most of them could not name the three warning signs the course was built around.

Internal audit kept finding the same mistakes at the counter: split cash deposits waved through, unusual transfers approved without a second look. People were finishing the course, not learning from it.

The cost: 27,000 working hours a year on a course that changed nothing, and repeat audit findings in 6 of 22 countries.

The approach

Four stages, from the real problem to a tested course. Stage names follow the Y.U.T.O. method once it is named.

  1. Y

    Stage one

We sat with branch staff and auditors for two weeks and listed the twelve real decisions where money laundering slips through. Everything else was cut.

  2. U

    Stage two

Each decision became a short case at a real counter: a customer, a pile of cash, a choice. No slides, and no reading before the first decision.

  3. T

    Stage three

Points for good catches, a clock for pressure and a leaderboard between branches. A wrong answer shows what happens next, three months later, in the audit.

  4. O

    Stage four

We tested it with 200 employees in three countries, cut two cases nobody found hard, and rewrote the feedback in plainer English for non-native speakers.

The result

  • 94%finished without a single reminder
  • 19 minaverage time to finish, down from 90
  • −60%repeat audit findings in the first year
For the first time, people talked about the compliance course at lunch. Audit noticed before we told them.
